This page outlines my experience in using HTML, ASP, JSP, JavaScript, Access, Excel, SQL Server etc. Web Development.

My background is as a C++ programmer, working on projects for companies such as the BBC, Sky, ITN etc. I also have a degree (2:1) in programming from the University of Hertfordshire. I have since developed these skills and retrained as a web developer.

Outlined below is a little more information about my experience in certain areas. If you require further information, please contact me for further information.

[Top] [Database Integration] [Site Design]

I mainly use HTML and ASP to generate web pages. I have not used Web Based XML yet, but will do so one day. Below are listed details about the experience I have in these various languages.

HTML

I have used Dreamweaver (up to XP), FrontPage and InterDev to develop with HTML. However, I do prefer to hand write the HTML code - which is how this site was put together. This is because I am a programmer by trade, and this is how I prefer to do it, although I am quite happy to use other systems as required.

Examples of my HTML work include this site, and other sites such as this site.

ASP

ASP is VB code within HTML files, to generate content on the fly. For example, to show the latest data from a database. I have used ASP a lot in the past 3 years - an example of a site is this one.

You can do a lot with ASP - show the latest data from a database, put data from forms into a database, send email forms, create email forms with user specific data, etc., etc.

Examples of my ASP work include this site, and other sites such as this site.

Contact me for more information / with your specific requirements.

JavaScript

JavaScript used to be popular in browsers. However, there are times when a user's browser does not have this installed or enabled, and different browsers handle the code slightly differently.

I have done a reasonable amount of JavaScript work - contact me for more information / with your specific requirements.

Database Integration

[Top] [Languages] [Site Design]

I have done a lot of work in integrating Databases into web sites. The three main types I have used are Excel Spreadsheets, Access Databases and SQL Server Databases. More information is outlined below.

Excel Spreadsheets

Whilst not the best format for publishing on the web, it is used a lot in commercial environments to store formatted data. I normally write some code to convert the Excel data into an Access database, simple because it makes displaying data more reliable. Converting this data is not normally expensive - see pricing for an example.

Access Databases

Although not a perfect system, a common way to store data, because it is cheap and reliable - so long as you do not have too much of it, and you do not have too many web site hits. This site is in fact powered by an Access database - without creating any DSNs either.

I have done a lot of Access Database integration - contact me for more information / with your specific requirements.

SQL Server

If Access is not suitable, then SQL is a good database to power web sites, even though it costs more. I have worked on sites with 1/3 of a million records in one table, but it still works fast despite frequent access to that table.

I have SQL Server 2000 on my development network, and so am able to develop sites with the Database format. I have done a lot of SQL Server integration - contact me for more information / with your specific requirements.

MySQL

I have done a little of this - and am prepared to use this if required - contact me for more information / with your specific requirements.

Designing Sites

[Top] [Languages] [Database Integration]

Whilst this is not my strongest skill, I am able to produce design for web sites. As I am not a designer, these sites will not have a strong graphical element to them (like site, for example). Instead, I will try to use colour and font to get a good looking site together.

However, I have a lot of experience in taking JPEGs from designers and converting them into a workable web site design. Examples include ExactModel.

I try to test sites on as many different browsers as possible - as I develop this site I am testing on IE 5.5, Netscape 7 and Netscape 4.78. This is not a complete set, but I believe that it covers most circumstances.
