Windows GUI Applications

This is a very diverse area - people want Windows applications do anything from a simple task, such as download a file from an FTP site, to a full blown word processor, like MS Word.

To make these products useable, it is very important to make it clear to users what they are supposed to be doing, to give pointers, and to make the code robust so that it does not GPF all over the place.

I have written numerous Windows application over the years. A few of these are outlined below, with URLs to download, where possible.

Autoplay CD

On this site you can download a simple Windows application I have written. This application allows you to configure CDs to autoplay files. There is a Wizard that helps you configure the file, without needing to know about the autorun.inf file etc.

HTML Analysis

A few years ago, I was asked to write some software that analysed HTML documents, downloaded from URLs. This was a tabbed dialog application, and had to be reliable. It is not available for download.

Digital TV Teletext Page Editor

A few years ago, I wrote an application that allowed users to edit Digital Teletext Pages. This was fairly complex, as it was a bit like an image editor as users could add images, text, graphic elements, links etc.

Database Integration

I have used various databases in association with C++. These include Btrieve, Access, MS SQL Server. If you require further information, then feel free to contact me.

NT Services

I have worked on a lot of Windows NT Services. Many of these have been system critical, and multi threaded. Some of these have been for companies such as the BBC, Sky TV etc., in delivering Teletext to the TV signals. Others have included NT Services for web sites - processing data.

There are a number of issues that are critical when writing such services. These include ensuring the code is written such that it does not take too much of CPU, by making the application multi threaded. And when making the code multi threaded, ensuring that the code is thread safe, and not passing pointers between threads, when the pointer could then be deleted.
